There were more than 300 applications this year and both Haddy, Mohamed and Selven have been chosen in the Retail, Hospitality and Tourism category. We wish them all the luck for the final. We all three of them could win it.

Meet Mohamed Arshe, a very determined and committed chef apprentice at the Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill.

Following a 12 year career in Retail, Mohamed felt the pressure of ‘staying put’. He immensely enjoyed cooking for his family in his spare time and took the leap and applied for an Apprentice Chef role at Hyatt Regency – The Churchill in 2018.

His clear passion to learn was soon recognised and as a result, he was soon offered the support of an Apprenticeship with Umbrella Training which he accepted immediately.

Mohamed takes pride in learning, practising hard and regularly showcasing his new skills. His mentor Ben Purton was impressed by Mohamed’s fearlessness in completely changing direction or starting from scratch on a dish he was unhappy with. Ben said, “Just OK was never good enough for Mohamed”.

He continues to impress his peers and has been nominated for multiple awards including the Purple Umbrella Award 2020 and more recently he was shortlisted as a finalist in the BAME Apprenticeship Awards 2020, which is an outstanding achievement.

We at Umbrella Training could not be prouder of Mohamed achievements and wish him all the best in his career.

Meet Selven Armoogum an apprentice to Firmdale Hotels

Selven is described as a fabulous employee, a huge asset to his organisation. Throughout Selven’s time as a Level 5 apprentice, he has time and time again gone above and beyond to demonstrate the skills and knowledge he has learnt in a number of ways. He has an aching desire to explore new methods and theories that will help him be the best manager that he can be. He constantly surpasses expectations and tirelessly looks for opportunities to include elements of his apprenticeship into his work.

Selven is not only committed to his job and the guests. He is equally committed to his team members and ensuring that they not only have the opportunity to learn and excel where possible, to consider his employees health and wellbeing both in and out of work. He became a ‘Mental Health First Aider’ for Dorset Square Hotel and truly believes that fitness, wellbeing and community are key to helping promote positive Mental Health.

“We all come from different background, from different hospitality background and industry. Different level of experiences but what we all did on the “Social Sunday Event” is shining and shouting out loud that we care and we look after each other.”
– Selven Armoogum

Selven has greatly benefited from his apprenticeship and was nominated and won for Best Operations Manager at the Purple Umbrella Awards 2020 and the ‘FirmdaleLife’ Award in May 2019 and has been shortlisted as a finalist in the BAME Apprenticeship Awards 2020.

The team at Umbrella Training are incredibly proud of Selven and his commitment and passion towards his apprenticeship and to the hospitality industry.
